Prof. Shah received his Ph.D. in Computer Vision in 1986. Since 1986 he has been with the University of Central Florida, where he is currently director of the Computer Vision Lab and an Associate Professor of Computer Science. He was responsible for initiating the computer vision research area in his department. He has graduated several Ph.D. and masters students. Professor Shah has published in the areas of motion [13, 17, 42, 19, 22, 9, 8, 7, 25, 27, 26, 24, 2], edge and contour detection [41, 20, 23, 31, 33, 32], multi-sensor fusion [18, 16, 10], and shape from shading and stereo [28, 36, 35, 5, 34, 29]. Professor Shah has received ten grants from NSF during the last seven years, as well as grants from other sources. He has served on the program committees of the Machine Vision and Robotics Conference, and the ACM Computer Science Conference. He is an associate editor of Pattern Recognition journal.
Professor Shah has worked with many undergraduates, a number of whom have co-authored papers with him [17, 18, 14, 13, 9, 8, 7, 30]. One of the 1989/90 REU participants (Matt Lavoie) received the Outstanding Research award on his B.S. thesis (REU project), was invited to make a presentation on his REU project at NSF and published one journal and one conference paper [16, 10]. One of the 1991/92 students (Bill Allen) published a paper in the 1992 International Conference on Pattern Recognition, and the journal version of this paper appeared in Pattern Recognition [17]. Another participant (Glenn Martin) presented his REU project in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research [1]. One of the 1992/93 REU participants (Katharine Keiter) worked on cyclic motion detection, and wrote a paper [30] which has been accepted for journal publication. One of the 1993/94 REU participants had a paper about his work accepted in the 1994 European Conference on Computer Vision (acceptance rate 18%), and a long version appeared in a journal.
