Computer Vision REU 99
abstract: Various tips for future REU students in Computer Vision. Somewhat tailored to the CV lab in UCF's Computer Science building.

tips:
  • Use ImageMagick for Unix. Look in /usr/local/apps/ImageMagick-4.0.9/bin for the binaries. "convert" can convert from one image format to another, and can make mpegs or animated gifs out of groups of images. display is like xv, but slower yet nicer.

  • Use xemacs (cough) (M-x speedbar, M-x font-lock-mode)

  • Check out image (etc) classes we wrote already. (On main page)

  • Do not drink the water.

  • Use bash instead of csh so you can hit up to retrieve older commands.

  • "acroread file.pdf" to read Acrobat files.

  • Pray to the Floridean rain gods (if you are of that religion) to make it stop raining.

  • "ghostview paper.ps" to read PostScript files.

  • Adjust keyboard and chair positioning to avoid dangerous AC drafts and possible hypothermia.

  • Run and compile large programs on eola instead.

  • In CDE, use ALT-left_arrow or ALT-right_arrow to switch desktops.

  • The third floor vending machines (in the Computer Science building) have soda varieties that the first and second floor machines do not. (Strange, no?)

  • If using Sohaib's frame grabber, restart NT to increase number of frames that can be grabbed before the program dies.

  • Avoid poisonous (okay maybe not) water sprinklers when walking about UCF.

  • If living in res, do not metal-chain chain your roommate's door if he (or she) fails to clean the dishes.

  • Worry not about runtime if your program does not work.

  • Gauss is da man.

  • Bring heavy clothing to wear in the lab. (Abe says "Bring a parka".)

  • Read the mod 13 conjecture

  • Wendy's in the Student Union has "free" plasticsilverware. (Or so I'm told)
